Activities

Even thought Chiang Khong is a small border town, we do have quite a bit of activities.
At The Hub and Funky box hostel we offers service for Hiking, Bicycle rental, Fishing, Kayaking or even just chilling out!

Chiang Khong has a lot more to offer than just the border crossing to Laos!
Stay for a few days and you will be amazed!

See what we have done lately on our facebook page here!

Nam Chang dam
(6 km. from town) (20° 22875N – 100° 37039E) is a beautiful lake, surrounded by jungle.  It use to have a 10 km. bike trail around it, but the trail is now partially overgrown by the jungle, so it can only be hiked.
To find the trail, cross the dam and start following the path on your right hand side. The lake is also used for fishing by locals. They told us there is snakehead fish and giant catfish in there, so why not give it a try yourself to catch one of these monsters?

The Khamu hill tribe village
is only 7 km. from Chiang Khong and easy to be reached by bicycle (if you don’t mind a few steep hills).

Next to the bridge to the church, there is a 4 km. trail that follows the river.  It will take you up into the hills and has breathtaking views.
Eventually the trail will go into the jungle, to end up at a small waterfall (20° 16,461’N – 100° 19,523’E). If you continue following the river for another 500 meter you will find an amazing 15 m. high waterfall. There is no more path though, so you will have to wake in the river and climb some rocks.
Put on some good walking shoes and take plenty of drinking water.
A guided tour to the hill tribes and waterfall is available at The Hub ( Tedsaban Soi 2 Chiang Khong, +66 93 2782928)

There is another waterfall worth visiting!
(20° 17,598’N – 100° 20,746’E)  This waterfall is more than 20 meter high and has a nice pool to swim in. Rent a motorbike to get there (or a bicycle for that matter, if you don’t mind some very steep hills on dirt road).

Take the main road that goes to Chiang Sean and after the first hill turn left just before the bridge.  Take the left side at the fork.  The road will turn into dirt road and has quite a few steep climbs.  You will ride through orange fields and see some breathtaking views along the way.  At one point the red dirt road will left go up to a rubber plantation and right stay flat leading into the jungle. Take the road on the right for about 200 meter, there look for the trail on your right hand side that goes down into the jungle.
The trail is pretty steep! Wear some good shoes!  After a few minutes you will already hear the waterfall.  The Hub ( Tedsaban soi 2 Chiang Khong ) offers a ride to this waterfall by minibus in dry season)

Take a bike ride along the Mekong.
Left of the old border crossing situated north of the town, a 60 km. dirt road starts that follows the river to Chiang Sean.
The Chinese Nationalist cemetery is also worth a visit.  A bit of history in our backyard : military cemetery  from the Chinese army 93th division, whom during the Chinese revolution refused to surrender to Mao. They fled, given free passage true Burma and eventually settled in the hills around this area.
To get there, take the main road to Chiang Sean. On the first hill where the road bends right, there is a dirt road on your right hand side. Follow it for 100 m. and you will see the gate. If the gate is closed, just go through the hole in the fence on the right.

Huaisai Maan view point
overlooking the Mekong and Lao has a beautiful panorama and  is located about 9 km away from Chiang Khong on the main road to Chiang Sean.
